Week 2

This week we have been learning about what clothing people in Tudor times wore.  We looked at how simple the clothes of poorer people were and how grand the clothes were for the richer people.  We made a glossary of some of the clothes and then created our own costumes.

Term 4

Welcome back to another short but busy term ahead!  Our writing will be based on the beautifully illustrated book 'Our Tower' by Joseph Coelho.  Our Geography topic this term is extreme weather.  Please look at the topic web on our curriculum page for more information about our learning this term.  You will also find the English and Maths Medium Term Plans there too.

Week 6

On Tuesday we had great fun making rock cakes for Creative day.

Week 5

We began this week with a visit to  St Nicholas Church where Rev Peter spoke to us about the Eucharist and why it is important for Christians today.  We all had the opportunity to have a little piece of bread and a cup of ribena to represent the Eucharist.

On Thursday we used the gym equipment as our whole school reward and watched a film with our teddies as our class reward.

We ended the week by making our own volcanoes, creating a chemical reaction using bicarbonate of soda and vinegar mixed with food colouring.  We worked in groups, all using the same amount of bicarbonate of soda but different amounts of vinegar which we carefully measured.  Finally we went outside and added the vinegar to create our reaction.

Week 4

Week 3

We had lots of fun on Thursday for World Book Day.  The children came to school dressed as adjectives.  We guessed which adjectives we were, then thought of alternative adjectives.  We created our own book covers for our favourite books and looked at lots of different books.

Week 2

This week we have been improving our jumping skills in indoor athletics in PE.

Week 1

This week we watched a live feed with the author Malorie Blackman.  We have started investigating circuits in science and have started our topic of Healthy Me in PSHE, where Year 4 and and Year 5 are taught in separate year groups.  In Geography we went on a hunt around the class to find facts about different extreme weathers.

Term 3

This term we will be learning about the history topic, Ancient Greece.  Our writing will be based on our class book, 'Who Let The Gods Out' by Maz Evans.  Please look at our topic web at the bottom of this page for more details of our learning this term.

Week 6

This week we have been completing lots of research on Ancient Greeks, looking at their daily lives and the Greek gods.  We have also been scoring lots of goals in netball.

On Friday, we 'dressed to express'!

Most of the class chose to come on a welly walk, where we were joined by a few of Owl Class children.  Those that didn't go for a walk joined the rest of Owl Class for some drawing.  We had fun wading through the puddles and explored the wooded area at the top of the school.

Week 5

This week the children got to meet the author of our class book, Maz Evans.  We had prepared questions to ask her on Monday and then had the opportunity to ask some of these questions when we met her.  Some children got their own copies of her books signed.

We also earned our class reward this week, so the children chose to bring in their own teddies and use the class ipads.  The children used a range of activities on the ipads, with some children completing professor assessor or playing games while others made stop animation films using their bears.

Week 4

We have been using the glockenspiels in music this week and learning to play a hoedown song.  We then went in the hall to sing and dance to our hoedown song.  In guided reading we have been reading about Evelyn Glennie and watched  a little of her playing the glockenspiel and agreed we need show lots of resilience and to keep practising to become as good as her.

Week 3

This week, we have been for a sound walk around the school, listening for different sounds, noticing what materials the sound needed to pass through and the effect different materials had on them.  In history, we noticed the differences between the Athenians and the Spartan and took on roles from both cities in our hot seating.

As the weather has been so cold this week, Year 4 joined Year 5 in the hall for fitness activities in PE.  We used a combination of exercises and dance to improve our fitness.  The children worked extremely hard during our own version of the cooper test.

Week 2

In RE this week, we made rakhi bracelets, which are a type of Hindu friendship bracelet, to remind us of the duties of friendship.

We also painted our Greek pots with the designs from last week.  They look amazing and will be coming home next week.

Week 1

We have had an exciting start to term 3, with a day of history and art on Thursday, where we began our learning about Greece and then looked at how in Ancient Greece they used pots to tell stories.  We then desgined our own vases, created them out of paper and then made them out of clay.  On Friday we had our 'Resourceful' curriculum day, with lots of fun activities.

We began with games in the class, designed to test our perseverance and team work.  We worked in groups of 4 and 5 and moved around each activity in a carrousel.

After break we worked as teams to create letters and then guessed each others letters and unscrambled the anagram to make the word beyond.

We then worked with Hedgehog class, helping them play board games.  After lunch we enjoyed mini golf and problem solving activities outdoors, where we needed to move across the water with 3 discs to stand on, cross the line at the same time and get to the moon and back without  breaking the chain.

Week 7

On Friday the PTA arranged for one of Santa's elves to visit our class with some gifts.  Y5 were still swimming, but the elf left some gifts for them.

Week 6

The Living Rainforest

We had an amazing time at the Living Rainforest for our educational trip linked to our topic on the rainforests.  The children enjoyed observing lots of different animals, especially Cinnamon, the elusive Sloth.

Week 5

This week we have been learning to program using turtle logo.  We have been learning to draw different shapes using this program.

Year 4 enjoyed dance in our classroom on Friday.  They worked in 2 groups to create their own dances and then performed to each other.

Week 4

This week we have continued to create our Christmas bunting in DT.  Over the past few weeks we have designed our bunting and cut out patterns, cut out shapes using our pattern pieces, sewed our shapes to our bunting and this week we added embellishments such as sequins to our shapes.  We will display our bunting in the classroom until just before Christmas, when we will take it home.  Year 4 children have been enjoying our dance topic on Friday afternoon, while Y5 have continued to improve their swimming strokes (sorry, no photos of swimming).

Week 3

Another super busy week for Fox class!

This week is anti-bullying week and we all started the week wearing odd socks to remind us to "make a noise" about bullying.  We discussed the difference between friendly banter and bullying and we all created posters explaining how important it is to treat each other with love and respect.  We also took part in a kindness workshop online where we joined other classes and other schools to talk about the importance of kindness in the world.  We continued the theme of anti-bullying in our PSHE lessons on Friday.

On Wednesday, we enjoyed the Bridge workshop with Daniel, which was all about 'Who the Messiah is?'  The children asked lots of questions and drew a picture of what they think Jesus would look like if he was on earth now and the job he might have.

Week 2

This week we have celebrated filling our marble jar with a teddy bears' picnic.  We went outside and played either football or with the breaktime equipment, before coming indoors to enjoy some snacks with our soft toys.  Before we could begin our reward, we designed Christmas images for our bunting, which we will begin to sew next week.

Week 1

This week we've been starting lots of new learning.  In English, we have been learning to tell the story of Hansel and Gretel and describing a setting of a dark wood.  In Science, we have been learning about how plants reproduce and in PSHE we have begun our topic on 'Celebrating Differences'.  Year 4 looked at the judgements we make about people based on their appearance and how these aren't always accurate, while Year 5 discussed what cultural differences were and how those cultural differences can cause conflict.  In art this week, we painted pictures of bonfires.  We used different sized brushes to create different effects and used only primary colours and black and white paints to mix the range of colours for our bonfires.

Term 1

Skilful Day

We had a great day learning lots of new skills, such as creating clay pots, making scones, using the rubbing in method and learning some new skills about money.

Week 6

This week in music, we have been playing the glockenspiels to play along with the music we have been listening to.  We took turns to play the instruments while the rest of the class clapped or sang along with the music.

Week 5

This week in PSHE, we have been continuing to learn about our rights and responsibilities and today, we have been thinking about rewards and consequences.  Year 4 made Freeze Frame sketches based on different situations.

  Week 4

Over the past few weeks, we have been looking at creating symbols from the Mayan Civilisation.  Last week we used our reproduced our images from Week 2 to create templates, using card and string, and this week we created a repeating pattern, using our templates as a stamp.

Week 3

This week we were really lucky to have Daniel from the Bridge Project in our RE lesson to lead a workshop on whether creation and science are conflicting or complementary. The children asked lots of amazing, really deep questions about the meaning of life and were so respectful when listening to each other's responses. Some examples of the questions asked include: Why did God create the world? Who created God? Who made dinosaurs?  What does God look like? Will we ever really know how the world began? We are all looking forward to delving deeper into this topic this term.

Week 2

This week, we have been recreating images found in the Mayan civilisation.  The children enjoyed copying the images, noticing the similarities with other cultures such as Egyptian Hieroglyphics and also how modern the images appeared.  Year 5 have enjoyed their first swimming lesson, while Year 4 have enjoyed gymnastics with our sports coaches.

Week 1

Wow what a super (if not very hot!) first week back!  We have been getting to know each other this week and have created a beautiful display out of all of our hands.  The hands have got all our wonderful gifts and talents on.  Then round the outside we have written in bees, flowers, clouds and birds what makes a successful classroom.

In RE this week we were focusing on our school vision of "Let all that you do be done with love".  We were thinking about how we can live out this vision every day at St Nicholas' Primary School.  Have a look at some of our posters they are really lovely.  Looking forward to another successful week next week!
